medicine
The medicalization of mental illness has given rise to many forms of pharmacological relief that restore chemical imbalances in one's brain.
ADHD In A Child
ADHD, or in other words Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder. I also like to call it the disorder that is often given by parents and teachers when they can't control the kid in the environment. Yes, there are some cases where the diagnosis is correct. Based on the children's behavior, learning patterns and more, it's easy to diagnose by far. I would like to tell my story on how my son was recently diagnosed with having ADHD at age 9. I of course will keep his name something different to protect him. We will just call him Jake in this case.

I'm Marvellously Medicated Darling
In this new mental health revolution we often speak about 'the 5 top foods you should be eating for your mental health' or the fact that you aren't a yogi master is the reason why you have crippling anxiety. Although I am a huge advocate for anything active or routines you can do to support being mentally healthy, I want to share my experience with medication.

We Need to Talk About this One Problem that People with Mental Illness Are Experiencing
Last night, I had one of the worst mental breakdowns ever in my life. My whole world just seems to have crumbled at my feet; this is the worst I’ve ever felt, like darkness just overcame my vision and all I see is black. My mind just started racing; most things that I don’t worry about, whether it is bills, budgeting for the month, even passing thoughts such as personal problems and things I usually have control over mentally are magnified 10x.

How I Changed My Opinion About Medically Assisted Treatment
After being in and out of treatment centers for heroin addiction and in and out of mental health facilities for bipolar disorder, I had formulated strong misconceptions about both the addiction industry and the mental health field. I thought there was nothing that would work for me—no pharmaceutical pill could take away the mental health symptoms I was dealing with. No type of therapy would be able to keep me sober, and I certainly wasn't going to agree to medically assisted treatment.

When I Stopped Taking My Medication
I have two medicines I take every morning—one for ADHD and another for other psychological problems (Anxiety, bipolar type II, etc.) Prescription drugs or any drug for that matter are never something you should stop taking without permission from your psychiatrist—or in this case, without admission to the psychiatric hospital. There has been a problem with the pharmacy involving my second medication which is an antipsychotic drug so, I have currently been off of it for over a week now. Coming off of antipsychotics suddenly like that can cause problems like a relapse of psychotic symptoms or the development of Tardive psychosis. I had an incident yesterday that I DID NOT START. Although, my mouth escalated to the point that there could’ve been a fight and I could’ve went to jail for murder if I wasn’t calmed down. As the people involved talked over each other to me, I was in a battle with my mind. I couldn’t speak, I couldn’t breathe. I just saw me with my hands around someone’s neck. It got so intense to the point where I was shaking and on the verge of an attack.

Why Are Psych Meds Seen as a Moral Issue?
For most health conditions, taking medication is typically accepted without too much fuss as a standard part of treatment. When it comes to mental illness, however, medications aren't just something we take. They often become a part of how we define ourselves, and how others define us. Taking medication becomes a moral question, as well as a medical question.

How Does Genetics Relate to Mental Illness?
It's a common misconception that we're born with the genes we're born with, and that's that, end of story. Except that's only the beginning of the story, and that's what the field of epigenetics is starting to explore. It has the potential to revolutionize our understanding of why people get sick.

Social Progress in Mental Health
The American mental healthcare system is the subject of considerable controversy. Edmund Higgins at Scientific Americanseems convinced that many of the current treatments for mental health disorders are insufficient, especially, when considering the lack of scientific advances in prescription medications.

Insight with Your Medication
Going to the psychiatrist for the first time can be intimidating. If you have never gone to the psychiatrist or you have but you recently changed to a new one, I have some advice for you to make things a bit easier. As a disclaimer: I'm not a medical professional. I'm just sharing my experiences as someone who uses these services to hopefully help people in a similar situation.
