The Night Owl Princess
Some hundred years ago, there was a princess, skin black as the night sky and thick, charcoal hair braided and wound down her back. Quick on her feet and sharp in the mind, she had just come of age to be married. She had her own ideas of marriage independent of her parents. But the King and Queen must consider political partnerships as the highest priority over their daughter’s happiness. The King had thus chosen a suitable husband twice her age, the prince of Telum. Telum was adjacent to their state, Nox. The prince held a solid mind and had a good hand for the sword, but most importantly, his state manufactured and distributed most of the weapons in the country.

The Owl and the Endless Night
Asa was ripped from his sleep by a deafening clap of thunder. Had he ever been this tired before? Surely that was impossible. Yet, he struggled to remember the last time he had awoken without asking himself that question. Couldn’t the storm let him be for a few hours? It felt like years since he’d known rest. A few measly hours of sleep was all he needed to clear his head, then he could finally decide how he would get out of this cursed place. The storm had other plans. With a metallic screech the surging wind ripped away part of the roof directly over the mound of hay he had claimed as his bed. Water began to fall yet he hardly noticed. He couldn’t remember the last time he’d been dry, had he ever been dry? It was so hard to remember anything before this endless night.

The Legend of Death
Thanas sat at his workstation in the animal cloning lab, a sympathetic frown creasing his face as he tried not to look at the ghost that hovered over his coworker’s shoulder. Patrick’s mother had passed away a few months ago. Thanas could see the weight of her dragging him down. Dark circles under his eyes, hands shaking, Thanas had already put in a complaint but his boss had simply shrugged his shoulders. They needed every available scientist they could get. Avoiding eye contact, Thanas carefully put in his ear plugs, blocking out the incessant mumblings of the spirit in order to better focus on his work.

Dark Dreams
“Dormant power, dark dreams, fragments long forgotten... return, return, return to me, child…” “Ugg, huh, hooo,” Black eyes piercing me seemed to be burned into my brain. Awaking in cold sweats and confusion just before my alarm, to the real nightmare I return.

Black Barn Owl
We say in Ridgewater that when you hear the black barn owl's call, someone nearby has died. Even worse, if you see it, you will surely be next. Every year, in the first week of November, our usually bright Ridgewater grows dark and quiet. The entirety of the small town is pregnant with superstition, and for good reason. At the start of November, going back as far as the town’s founding, a chilling wind blows through the streets, signaling the start of the cursed week. It used to be just one—the number of people who die during the seven days. Now, we townspeople consider ourselves lucky to make it through with less than a dozen.

Up the Ridge
When we got to the very top of the ridge where the noise might of originated I slowed the truck down to a crawl and looked around not knowin what I might be about to find. That gaw damn sound was like jagged metal making love to itself for the devil to enjoy. I heard it a couple times before. Like a birdcat monster wailin to the uncared for universe.
