Home of the Terrorized, Land of Pay-by-the-Hour
A few last words for justice
Final judgement in permanent limbo
Broken-backed, I endured in vain
Collapsed under the weight
Of self-actualization
I hacked my way free
From an early grave
πβοΈπ
I emerged, abraded, but victorious
And winners, it is said
Get to write the words eternally read
So I've scratched out my terms
In dripping vermillion red
πβοΈπ
I counted my chickens, but all I got were eggs
πβοΈπ
Still, the scales don't tip
I pile the platter to superabundance
Still, the beam doesn't budge
Offloading every crime and fear
Still brings me no nearer
The justice my soul
Is in riotous upheaval for
πβοΈπ
Because winning is losing
If you can't pay for the certificate
Legality has lost all meaning
What goes to trial are
Cheap cases "worth" winning
πβοΈπ
In lieu of legislation
The code has been presidentially amended
A list of crimes, struck from the books
No more prosecution pending
Regardless of evidence collected
Rape, Human trafficking, fraud, every manner of abuse
Invisible, penal code pages
Stuffed into the emperor's invisible gold shoes
πβοΈπ
It was said to me that a republic saves us from
Self-interest, treading the needs of the numerous
Instead, the game's been rigged to
Pay out only for the highest bidder
So the rich get richer as the rest get sicker
Our untouchable class hovers above us
Unafraid of consequences
Seemingly insulated from the
Guillotine's C H O P!

Trickle Them Down, But Not Out
The thing about smart people is that they should know better, but alas, intelligence is not the same as wisdom. Not only do the mistakes of experts too short on visionβwhen they are not correctedβhave the potential to do great and far-reaching damage, but they also undermine public confidence in the very notion of expertise. This is particularly so when expertise is wielded in defence of the rich and powerful as a cudgel against those laid low. As an academic, this lack of faith in βso-called expertsβ is painful to see as it plays out in the spread of dis-/misinformation, conspiracy theories, and anti-intellectualism writ large. But it is also an understandable impulse given the catastrophic failure of an economic ideology pushed by certain economic experts. Supply-side economics has shaped a broken system for the last half-century and has arguably done more to undermine the fabric of the American Dream than any policy framework of the past century.
