Holes in the Sky

from a prompt to write about the starry sky

The sky is black wool

stretched tight

over the world.

Stars puncture it —

tiny holes,

each a broken promise.

I watch them flicker

like words

that shouldn’t be spoken.

My eyes focus on gaps

in constellations,

darkness in what’s absent.

And still, light escapes,

illuminating

where I am.

I think about keeping

promises

to myself.

This was for a prompt on The Diamond Quill website.

Would appreciated feedback regarding the last stanza. I went back and forth with what I wrote above and this:

"I keep thinking about/promises/to myself."
