My Gumroad Journey

Sold some arts, but struggle with visibility

In March 2024, I decided to get started on Gumroad as a way to sell some arts, books and establish an online earning source. I didn't think I did anything for many months. New ventures are scary and full of roadblocks.

By 2025, I was already there. I had 35 listings, but zero footfall. I was very suspicious. Yet another platform where I would put my time and energy and get nothing.

I didn't do marketing. Those arts and e-books would not be looked at in a saturated world, I felt.

But then something serendipitous happened by mid-January. No less than a miracle to me.

The venerable Buddhist monks were going on a historical peace walk. The 2,300 miles walk from Texas to Washington DC, with their dog Aloka.

On my birthday night, in early January, I made an art piece on that theme, just to restore my serenity.

A few days later, I posted it in a Facebook group and woke up in the morning to 10,000+ likes. It had gone viral. People liked, commented, blessed, and wanted to buy it.

I was overwhelmed. I had never witnessed that kind of avalanche of responses. Facebook even blocked me for view days, thinking its bots. They were just peace-loving people.

I directed them to Gumroad. Having an account from before, connected to Stripe helped me.

Never having sold arts before, unsure, I kept the price nominal at $1.

A person purchased it. Maiden art sale feels just so exciting.

Somebody gave $5 for the piece, for to her $1 felt too little. There are kind people in the world.

Most people gave more than $5. I hiked the cost. I could see it's much in demand.

Before I knew it, there were 50+ sales with a total revenue of about $450. I was shocked and thrilled.

This success inspired me to open an Etsy shop too.

But the rapid success in Gumroad did not last.

On Gumroad I now have 70+ items at minimal prices. Yet sales are stagnant.

I guess it is all about visibility or hypes.

I try to post my Gumroad links in Facebook groups. I don't think anybody cares. I thought previous buyers will like email and purchase. They don't care too.

It's hard.

So, if you read this, check my Gumroad. If you are interested and your budget allows, please check the link below. The cost of each item is minimal.

If you are in Gumroad and have savored success, share tips for me and readers.
